About This Event

The World Food Program describes 2022 as a year of unprecedented hunger, with roughly 828 million people facing food insecurity. Climate change, as well as overlapping global shocks including supply chain bottlenecks and the escalating Russia-Ukraine war have impacted food systems, both abroad and at home, with increasing pricing and food shortages. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield joins the Council following her recent trip to the African continent to discuss global food insecurity and how the United States is working with the international community to alleviate this rising crisis.

U.S. Representative to the United Nations

Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield was nominated by President Joe Biden to be the Representative of the United States of America to the United Nations as well as the Representative of the United States of America in the Security Council of the United Nations.

Ertharin Cousin

Distinguished Fellow, Global Food and Agriculture

Prior to joining the Council, Ertharin Cousin served as executive director of the UN World Food Programme where she led the world’s largest humanitarian organization from 2012 to 2017. She also previously served as US ambassador to the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture in Rome. Cousin is founder and CEO of Food Systems for the Future.
